Parent asks son to follow Geneva conventions while playing CoD

What happens when your kid’s addicted to “ultraviolent brainwashing videogames”? Ask them to follow the Geneva Conventions.

I asked Evan to google the Geneva Convention. Then he had to read it and then we had to discuss it. This we did. So the deal is that Evan has to fight according to the rules of the Geneva Convention. If his team-mates violate the Convention then play stops and Call of Duty goes away for a while.

The convention basics:

  1. Medical teams on the battlefield must help all injured, not just those of the same party.
  2. Similar to the first convention, but for battles that happen at sea.
  3. A prisoner of war has certain rights.
  4. Civilians must be protected in some ways.

There are also three additional protocols (think amendments) that have even less to do with Call of Duty than the first four. I think it’s a nice sentiment, but maybe they parent should have researched a little more himself before making these terms. Maybe Bushido would have been a better fit… any way to keep your kids from running off into the woods to freeze to death when you take away their xbox ;)

Whoa. America’s Army is over –that way–>

Interesting negotiation by the parents for gaming rights. But I agree on the lack of research by the parents. They expected their son to google the geneva convention and study it; would it have been unreasonable for the parents to actually dig into CoD more thoroughly and realize it’s just not part of the game mechanics?

    Kid 1, ‘Rents 0

I could see this holding a bit more weight in America’s Army though. At least there are medics, civis, ROE etc..

Also: if a teammate violates this crazy rule, the kid loses CoD himself for a while? That’s a bit much, and that kid is gonna have fewer and fewer people to play with after a few “suspensions.”

(singing) One, is the loneliest number…

    • I hated it when my parents tried to get cute like that…
