Mangler – A Ventrilo Compatible Client for Linux

mangler ventrilo for linux

A buddy of mine told me that Ventrilo doesn’t play nice with Wine (or at least his build anyway), and told me about Mangler, an open source alternative to waiting another x number of years for Ventrilo to put out an official Linux binary. Currently, said guy is using Mangler to stream mp3s to our vent server, which is pretty sweet. You can use it for talking with people too, if that’s your thing.

Mangler is an open source VOIP client capable of connecting to Ventrilo 3.x servers. It is capable of performing almost all standard user functionality found in a Windows Ventrilo client

Mangler 1.0 includes:

  • Connecting to Ventrilo 3.x servers
  • Keyboard push to talk
  • Mouse button push to talk
  • Speex and GSM support
  • Per-user volume controls
  • Notification sound effects
  • Setting your comment and URL

Quake2World on Windows 7 x64

You need to do a few things to get QuakewWorld running on Windows 7 x64 (and probably Vista/x32 as well). The main problem I encountered was an incompatible version or rsync that would crash and cause permission errors in the form of Access Denied messages. To fix this, download the latest Windows version of Quake2World:

http://satgnu.net/files/quake2world-win32-snapshot.zip

Then grab sereds’ cwrsync package:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/sereds/files/

Extract Quake2World to the root of your c: drive

Install or extract cwrsync and copy the contents of its bin directory to c:\quake2world, overwriting anything that gets in your way.

Now you can run Update.bat to download the game’s resources:

And voila!
